Cookies Policy
Last updated: 29 June 2026
What Are Cookies?
Cookies are small text files placed on your device by websites. This site uses browser localStorage rather than traditional HTTP cookies for most storage purposes. localStorage functions similarly — it stores data on your device — but is not automatically sent to the server with each request, providing stronger privacy by default. The Privacy and Electronic Communications Regulations (PECR) apply to both cookies and similar technologies such as localStorage.
What We Store
We use a minimal number of storage items. No third-party tracking cookies are currently set. The table below describes every item we set on your device.
| Name | Type | Purpose | Duration | Essential? |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| ballotbuddy_cookie_consent | localStorage | Stores your cookie consent preferences (accept/reject and granular choices). | Until you clear browser storage, or 12 months after consent is given. | Yes |
| vm_quiz_answers | httpOnly Cookie | Stores your Policy Matchmaker quiz answers so you do not need to retake the quiz on every visit. Used to generate personalised candidate recommendations on your local elections page. Contains only your answer values (e.g. "agree") and policy IDs — no personal data. | 1 year from completing the quiz, or deleted immediately if you select "Retake quiz" on the results page. | Yes |
Essential vs Optional Storage
Essential storage is required for the site to function correctly and cannot be disabled. Under PECR, essential cookies/storage are exempt from consent requirements. Both items listed above are essential — the quiz answer cookie is required for the candidate suggester to show personalised recommendations on your local elections page.
We do not currently use any optional or tracking storage. All data we set is strictly necessary for the features you actively use. You can delete quiz answers at any time by selecting “Retake the quiz” on the results page, which erases the cookie immediately.
Third-Party Cookies
We do not currently set any third-party cookies. If we integrate analytics or other third-party services in future, this policy will be updated and you will be asked for consent before any such cookies are set.
How to Manage or Delete Storage
You can clear all localStorage data for this site at any time through your browser settings:
- Chrome / Edge: Settings → Privacy and security → Clear browsing data → Cached images and files / Cookies
- Firefox: Settings → Privacy & Security → Cookies and Site Data → Clear Data
- Safari: Preferences → Privacy → Manage Website Data
You can also use your browser's Developer Tools (F12 → Application → Local Storage) to inspect and delete individual items set by this site.
Changes to This Policy
We may update this policy if we add new functionality that requires additional storage. We will update the version number in our consent system so you are asked to re-consent where appropriate.
